If you're thinking about trying Ubuntu, they have a Windows installer
called wubi that actually creates a disk image that lives on the Windows
partition (just go to Ubuntu's download page and you'll see a link for "run
with Windows"). This gives you the ability to dual-boot without the need to
re-partition your disk. It also makes it really easy to uninstall Ubuntu
and try something else if it doesn't work out for you.
