It happened again last night. As before, no warning, nothing in
messages or logs. And the sound continued; just X was stuck.

After rebooting on Friday I applied all the Xubuntu 12.04 updates, some
of which related to X. I was hoping that might fix the problem, but
apparently it did not.

This computer ran straight Ubuntu 10.04 without a problem from the time
it was released until just a couple months ago when I finally did a
fresh install of Xubuntu 12.04. The freezes started after installing
12.04. It is always possible that it is hardware related, but if so the
hardware problem would have to have begun coincidentally right after
installing 12.04.

I think I'm just going to shop for a distro that I can get with just
Xfce and multimedia codecs, and long term support, really, really long
term support. It's annoying always having to futz with things.
