Interestingly, there were more updates pushed out a couple of days ago. Among them were Xorg and gnome-settings updates. After I applied them I rebooted and magically the system is now honoring my PreferredMode option in the xorg.conf file, and I haven't had a crash since. knock on wood, the problems seem to be fixed. I have a slew of updates waiting on my Mythbuntu system that I've been afraid to apply.
