   Many applications, audacity and xsane come immediately to mind, cannot
find devices that are not connected before the application is invoked. You
discovered that's the case with your router: it needs everything to which it
will communicate connected before being turned on. It is during the
initiation process that such devices and applications look for compatible
externalities.
