So, one of my theories was some kind of memory corruption or other
software fault. However, while the laptop display was showing the
artifacts, I took screenshots and the artifacts aren't visible in the
screenshots, and I connected an external HDMI display and the
artifacts aren't visible there either. I think the finger of blame is
starting to point at either the display or some interconnect.
