Rooting isn't an issue with DUO client unless the org that deploys DUO turns on a Tampered Devices policy, But you have to use the deluxe edition of Duo for that.
We only have 125 users on DUO. Last year our renewal was around $6000 a year. I switched us to the cheapest DUO (the basic one) And that cut the renewal fee in half. Nothing that DUO does under the deluxe edition is worth having done IMHO. Your IT manager must be a real horses' ass to pay that kind of money extra just so he can be a dick to users who are allowing him to save money by not buying phones for them. Legally your employer can't require you to load DUO on your personal cell phone just as a MFA token. You might try telling your IT manager if he wants you to run the DUO MFA app then he can supply you with a cell phone and pay for it or turn off the tamper device baloney.
