The trouble is, THERE IS NO FUNDING IN AREAS SUCH AS THIS! My biggest
frustration with my current employment at UP, which is to design a
networked punch clock as I've told some of you on this list, is the fact
that the University gives us funds with one hand and takes it away with
the other. I've just been told earlier today that the fund which included
my salary for last month has been temporarily exhausted, and I won't be
paid until further notice. Well, if this goes on any longer, I might just
go tell them that I won't keep working until further notice :-).
Without any funding, research of any kind is incredibly difficult. In the
case of hardware research such as what I'm doing right now, it's
especially so, but it's no less true for other kinds of research. If no
one provided any materials on which to actually perform research of any
kind, then obviously, we can't expect any kind of output at all.
It has nothing to do with our culture. I don't believe that any culture
is innately predisposed against doing research or being "left or right
brained" as the originator of this thread has asserted. Such cultural
distinctions are asking for stereotypes which are unwarranted. The real
reason why there has been a dearth of any good research from our country
is because we as a people do not have it our priority to do so for some
reason. I personally know a lot of people who could do lots of good
research that would be world-class indeed, *if only proper funding and
facilities were available*. Which, I am sad to say, is not the case, as I
am finding out every day...the hard way.
