another way could be...

1. format new partition
2. mount new partition to a temp dir
3. recursive copy /usr contents TAKING CARE of preserving privileges,
links and ownership to the new partition (refer to man cp)
4. unmount the new partition
5. modify fstab for /usr to mount on the new partition
6. reboot

during this time, make sure you got boot disks lying around in case of
... you know...

it is very important to preserve the links, privileges and ownership
during copying. i goofed once when moving /var before :(
