Know what your new NIC is, and make sure it's supported by the latest
Linux kernel (or whatever version of the kernel you'd prefer to use).
Install the NIC then recompile your kernel with support for your new NIC.
Set up the network scripts. I am not sure what and where these are in
RH4.2, but it should be somewhere in /etc. You could do a 'grep -lrE eth0
*' from there and check out the files it spews out. You may have to do
additional finetuning work with your routing tables and such.
