glibc-2.2 comes with its own ldconfig, so there is no need to recompile
ld.so-1.9.9, which is really older than the glibc-2.2 ldconfig.
To take advantage of the new features of linux-2.4, you need to rewrite
some and to recompile others of the utilities. For example, to get
32-bit uid support, you need to recompile under the new glibc all
utilities that use uids. To get faster ext2 support, etc., you need to
recompile e2fsprogs-1.19 or e2fsprogs-1.20.
