#_ I guess all this discussion (and perceived merits) of using plain
#_ tarballs versus a package manager is because of the basic lack of
#_ knowledge on package managers in general.
#_
#_ Lesson 1: The source is still there.
#_
#_ There is such a thing as SOURCE RPMs. These files contain:
#_
#_ 1. The original tarball, as released by the author
#_ 2. A SPEC file, which contains:
#_ 0. The packager, and his contact info
#_ 1. Build commands
#_ 2. Source patches to make the tarball build in a target environent
#_ 3. Shell commands to initiate building and installing into a system.
#_ 4. Documentation on the changes done to accomodate fixes etc.
I therefore manifest that, although a src.rpm is an alleged package; that is
only half the truth, since to arive at the porported package <exhibit
metaheptuple c++>: rpm, one has to process the source tar.bz2 (or it's alias
tar.gz) first, (which was subject of a subpoena duces tecum ad
testificandum) pursuant to the laws governing source tarballs, which
include, but are not limited to: patch, ./configure, make, make install and
such other collateral that ./configure may require.
With the permission of this honorable court I will therefore stipulate, if
the opposing pannel will agree with the stipulation, that:
1 ) src.rpm is a package.
2 ) src.rpm requires the processing of source tarball, albeit
automagically.
3 ) src.rpm will result to rpm
4 ) src.rpm is the best of both worlds - the factum provandum.
Having made the offer of stipulation and if the opposing pannel agrees with
the stipulation, no further setimonies are needed your honor.
