The tarball-vs-package debate is fruitless. Have you seen FreeBSD's
packaging system? they use tarballs. BUT they support dependencies,
manifests, etc using their tarball system.
RPM is nothing more than a CPIO archive (VERY similar to tarball) with a
header attached. Try dissecting an RPM (by using 'dd' to strip off the
header). You'll find that the remaining part can be installed using cpio.
So what's the fuss? personally I prefer packages (the dependencies and
seamless updating, etc, is handy) but if someone uses tarballs, let
'em! on a LOT of other UNIXes it's the only way, so best to be familiar
with it.
