if this is so, I think it would be much better if you do it manually. use
ifconfig to bring the interface up, then use route (or better yet ip route
.. from the iproute2 suite) for each of the static route you'd like to
add.

i'm assuming it's 9 kBytes/sec ... If you're subscribed to a 64kbps
service, then it's not bad at all. If you're paying for more, then you
should be getting more. you could also try this bandwidth test from
msn/zdnet
http://msn.zdnet.com/partners/msn/bandwidth/speedtest50.htm
cnet also got one like this to compare with different DSL carriers.
