On the Barrage of Responses and Some Follow Up Questions

I'm delighted that so many of you have taken the time to write about how
you got started using Linux and answer other related questions. It gives
us a snapshot of the variety of routes that our favorite OS made inroads
into our midst.

Of the responses, it's interesting to note that almost all who responded
still use Linux, only one no longer uses it. To the statistically inclined
though, the sampling is already biased in favor of continuing use of Linux
because the list is, after all, one oriented towards Linux users.

Seeing that ease-of-use has not been a deterrent to the most hardened
Linux users, one question that arises though is what is it about Linux
keeps the non-converts away? But that is mostly a point to ponder about as
we "peddle" Linux to prospective users.

After hearing what brought most of us into the Linux fold, whether it be a
professor, employer, friend, or self wrought consciousness that lo and
behold, there is an OS other than <fill-in-the-blank> out there that I can
use, the next question that perhaps would be -really- interesting is this.

[... and this. Reminder: delete all text up to this marker when replying.]

For what different functions have you deployed/used Linux?
In other words, for what purposes are you using Linux now?
Why do you think other people should be using Linux?

Again, I hope you enjoy reading the responses as much as I have.

Your fellow Linux tibak,
