> For what different functions have you deployed/used Linux?

nearly every conceivable service thinkable: gateways, routers, proxies,
mail, DNS, HA/LVS/heartbeat, databases, file sharing, printer sharing,
fax, dialin/dialout, RAS, clusters, network topology research, IM, software
engineering and development workstations, climate modeling

and in the user space: word processing, document creatation, games (hey, i
like network gaming w/ freeciv), making a few webpages, making a few
graphics, watching VCDs, listening to music mp3, ogg or otherwise.

and the list goes on...

it is quite impossible to see things that are undoable in Linux nowadays.
these are just the things on the top of my head. and others will be able
to point out more. as for me, i have a workstation at the office with no
windows, i have a workstation at home with windows just for games like
cossacks and others.

> In other words, for what purposes are you using Linux now?

i think my answers above can be summaried into these groups:

running a mini-ISP for the Ateneo. high performance clustering and
networking reseach. software development. and desktop computing.

> Why do you think other people should be using Linux?

it is not my nature to force users to use something else. i do not try to
convince people to switch OSes. however, when somebody asks me for a
solution i always give the Linux/Open source solution first. full blown
advocacy in the desktop space is not what i am doing.

i think they should use linux because it is a free(as in free speech) and
reliable operating system. it has also gained a level of popularity
comparable to windows when it was just starting. linux is not just about
free. it is about choices. using an open sourced operating system with
open source software give the users a pleora of choices, unlike some
other operating systems that try to lock users to it. as richard stallman
nicely place it...

Free software is a matter of liberty, not price.
