hi tukayo and other PLUG listers,
I also got a copy of that mail sent to me kasi anduon yung pangalan ko. I
already sent Mr. Antonio private email regarding my "claims" and some
questions. He has yet to respond. He keeps using the phrase "once and for
all" then brings this "non-issue" back out of the "grave".

I reviewed any statements I've made on the list and I don't recall or see
myself claiming the "title" of first Linux user. Ang naalala ko lang si
Kelsey at si Doc Mana at ako, we were trying to figure out who did. We had
narrowed it down to the three of us from our limited knowledge. Closest
we came to determining that was based on dates of email that (a) said
person had possession of Linux, (b) had used Linux (just booting it
doesn't count), (c) gave copies of Linux to others. I don't have copies of
the email exchanges back then... si Kelsey siguro meron. On my webpage at
UPM, I do have a line that reads, "I have the _dubious_ honor of being the
first Filipino to use Linux in the Philippines." (underline added for
emphasis) There's definitely doubt about who was first and no way in the
world to really know for certain, so I put the word dubious in there. It
is also doubtful that any real honor is accorded me just because I used
Linux ahead of anyone. It is a matter of the trivial. As for the accolades
he says he doesn't care about, where are the accolades for this? Should I
be a millionaire now because I may have been first? And he says he used
Linux in 1991. Cool. Why didn't he come out in 1992-1994 and tell us or
the world (or the BBS community which he was/is a part of)? He can have
the "title" of First Linux User in the Philippines since he wishes to
debunk the PLUG FAQ entry. Someone should probably update it to read
Engels Antonio.
In rethinking the statements I've made because _I_ should be more careful.
A "probably" belongs in that line about "honor" along with a disclaimer. I
should just get rid of that line since it's so contestable. Anyone can
claim so many things but the bottom-line is what is it worth. :)
As to the question, "If the server was indeed Windows, so what?" the point
is one of truthfulness. Or wanting to seek and provide that truth. Which
is one thing I've learned about most techies. Truth means a lot to us,
even when we're "competing" against each other it's hard to boast about
fictitious figures or accomplishments. I mean, it's really easy for people
in sales, advertising or marketing to either skew the facts, pretty up the
figures, bloat the ratings and all that because they can easily live with
their white lies, their window dressings. I'm not saying all of them lie.
It's just easier for them. In engineering or tech, we can't afford to lie
especially to each other. Which is why an open mailing list like this
attracts us like flies. Truth is important. Even when it means admitting
mistakes, I think a lot of us here would pursue truth even when our ego
might get hurt. Truth to us is sacred.
So there... just what I thought about it.
I'm trying to keep my asbestos insulator on.
And after it all, the proof of the pudding is in the tasting. :)
Let's just continue to promote the use of Linux whatever the outcomes.
