> 1.) do i need a straight through, or crossover (or plug it to the hub's
"uplink" port) cable to connect the motorola cyber surfer to my hub? eh
kung i recta ko to my eth0? straight oh crossover?
Normally, all CMs connect to the PC via a straight-through Cat5. I suspect
this is what you need for the CyberSurfer CM.
> 2.) i observed sa net cafe nang isang phrend na: pag sinaksak ang cable
modem straight to the hub, yung mga PC na naka saksak to that same hub gets
assigned different global IP addies, hmmm, how does destiny ba authenticate
its users? through the MAC of the nic(s) or, walang authentication (as i
suspect)
MAC authentication, although weak, should be imposed lalo na kung yung IP
provisioning mo is thru DHCP. Allowing any PC to get an IP will deplete
your IP block pretty quickly.
> 3.) if wala ngang authentication or, through MAC address lang na pwede
namang baguhin through ifconfig, does that mean, na pag nag pakabit ako nang
destiny cable TV service...tapos i attach that cable to a cable modem that i
own (or stolen from another cable isp, or whatever :-) eh mag kakaroon na
ako nang destiny internet, and just need to pay for cable tv fees?!?!!?!?
Kung wala ngang authentication ang Destiny (which I highly doubt), yes,
pwede (you don't even need to change MACs since wala namang authentication
na based on it). I suspect na kung hindi thru MAC ang authentication nila,
baka thru CM key identification. So unless yung ninakaw mong CM eh di
nireport at active pa rin sa records nang Destiny, then I doubt you could
get away with it. Note that:
IP provisioning (e.g. thru DHCP) != authentication
Destiny may well be using another means of authentication that is not tied
with IP provisioning.
> 4.) will it be ok, if i attach nga the cable direct to the hub and let my
mom's win98 machine attach straight to the hub, and i attach my slackware
box to the hub?
Dunno about this. Sa system namin hindi ito pwede. Then again we're not
Destiny.
> 5.) kung mag ip_masq na lang ako instead of just sticking both PCs to
the hub, where the cable modem is also attached, mas ok kaya ang
performance.
Mas ok ang performace *without* IP_MASQ since walang additional processing
overhead.
