Hi Andrew,
#so what can I do with a real modem that I can't do with a softmodem? does
#softmodem mean that it has a modem programmed in the firmware?
#
Softmodem is a piece of software the performs the function of a hardware
modem. There are a few issues I can think of when using softmodem as
opposed to a hardware modem:
0. The softmodem needs to be installed and configured in the receiving
system. The issue here is availability of the softmodem itself in
different OS and platforms you use.
1. Since it's softmodem, the CPU is the one that flips the bits, and makes
sense of them. This may not be a problem in 1-GHz boxes but the issue is
with smaller devices like a Palm, or mobile devices.
BTW softmodem software can be stored anywhere.. but the thing to note is,
it's loaded in memory, and executed by the CPU -- a firmware is really
just a storage device where software, and/or data can be burned.
stay cool.
