both are functionally the same. however, the softmodem takes plenty of CPU cycles
compared to it's hardware brethen, and sometimes has issues with platform availabilty
(ie. nokia 51/61xx modem specs are not publicly available, therefore 3rd party
developers sometimes has to experiment/reverse engineer it first before they can use
it. unless of course nokia issues the specs out)
