Here's our setup:
CERSA - MDK8, Pentium II 350MHz, 64MB RAM, Intel EtherExpress/100
Eliazo - RH7.1, AMD K6-233MHz, 32MB RAM, Intel EtherExpress/100
Backup #3 - Mac OS X, PowerPC G4/400MHz, 512MB RAM, 10/100-mbps
Intel InBusiness 8-port 10/100 switch
Average Transfers (650MB ISO images)
FTP (proftpd): ~7MBps max.
scp (OpenSSH 2.9p1): ~3.7MBps max.
smbclient (Samba 2.2.0): ~3.9MBps max.
smbmount + cp (Samba 2.2.0): ~3.9MBps
httpd (Apache 1.3.19): ~4.0MBps
The only reason why we're probably not getting any higher throughput
with ftp is probably because of the network load CERSA serves (which is
quite a lot) or because of the hard disk speed/processor speed of
Eliazo. Eliazo isn't used that much by many, so I'll try running
informal benchmarking tests with that.

Our current settings involve using only TCP_NODELAY. I'll see how the
other options improve/worsen performance. Thanks for the tip. :)
The best performance I've had so far is only with ftp, and nowhere near
as good with samba. But then again, for huge file transfers, I rely on
ftp's resume in case anything happens.
P.S. I still have no idea why, at times, CERSA, despite its os level at
255, loses in samba elections to Win9x clients. As William would say,
"Conundrum!"
