Hmmmn,

You might be hit by SYN FLOOD..  (Denial of service attack on your SMTP) On
your SMTP server try this command: netstat -an |grep SYN_RECV . You're under
attack if you have numbers of SYN_RECV displayed. You may try looking  for
the logs, this will show how busy your sendmail is..

took so long (about 30 secs or so) before sendmail would reply.  What
could cause the delay?
