I didn't know that was your point, but since you mentioned it: I remember
being on the ReiserFS mailing list (and using it) before the r5 hash was
out. There was an extensive discussion regarding hash collissions on the
default hash, I forget if it was tea or rupasov.

I did not have enough number of files/directories to hit a collission, but
what if I did? What recourse would I have to fix the potential of hitting
a collission and suffering whatever consequences it could bring?

Of course ReiserFS is much more stable now, and I agree that for most
applications the r5 hash and the ReiserFS kernel code has so far been
proven to be very stable.

(Note: there are current issues with rm and unlink. Patches are still in
the ReiserFS's "pending" directory, meaning they haven't yet been folded
into the kernel as of 2.4.7. Join the ReiserFS mailing list to keep
yourself updated.)

It's sad that this is how you see my arguments, but I do not think there's
much I can do to help but be as objective as I can in my "reports". I do
not need to prove anything to the list as far as XFS is concerned. Aside
from the fact I use it and am part of the mailing list, there's nothing in
it for me with XFS. I'm not a developer, and I don't have a stake in SGI
(besides, XFS has been GPL'd).

I have been as extensive as I can be given my currently limited (happily
growing) knowledge to hopefully provide the other members of the list with
a view of XFS and ReiserFS from "another side" as you may. I do not think
XFS has gained ground among most of us PLUGgers, yet. Those of us who do
not use ext2 probably use ReiserFS. Of course there are those using JFS,
ext3, XFS, and what-have-you, but they're an exception.

I have also hoped that I would be able to find an opportunity to
constructively discuss various points of the new filesystems for Linux. I
am sure that what I already know about ReiserFS and XFS are not all to it.
I hoped, and continue to hope, that sharing what I know to the list will
enable me to validate the truth (or falsity) of these.
