A UP Medical Alumni Society in America member and a faculty member of
the UP College of Medicine gave presentations at the Annual Slice of
Life / Computers in Healthcare Education Symposium, held 1 - 4 August
2001 at the Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich, Germany. Dr.
Emmanuel Besa (UPCM '67), chair of the UPMASA Computer Committee and
Associate Professor at the MCP Hahnemann University in Philadelphia, PA,
presented "UPGRADING A THIRD WORLD COUNTRY MEDICAL SCHOOL FOR THE NEW
MILLENNIUM
(From Zero to Broadband: Lessons Learned in Building a Network
Infrastructure for a College of Medicine in the University of the
Philippines). His co-author in this paper was Dr. Alvin Marcelo (UPCM
'91), chair of the Medical Informatics Unit, UPCM. The paper presented
the efforts of the UPMASA to upgrade the computer infrastructure of UPCM.
Dr. Cito Maramba (UPCM '93), also of the Medical Informatics Unit, UPCM,
presented a poster entitled: "Penguins with Stethoscopes: Free and Open
Source Software for Healthcare Education". Co-authored with Eric Pareja,
Dr. Herman Tolentino and Dr. Alex Yu, the poster detailed the use of
Free and Open Source Software such as GNU/Linux as part of the
Healthcare Education environment in UP Manila and UPCM . A web version
