I think this has been answered before by Orly (see his email on
must have books). Anyway, basically it depends on what programming
language you want. Linux native language is C. So, you must have at
least C Programming Language by K&R. If you want more advanced stuff, go
for C++ Programming Language by Bjarn Stroustrup. If you want Java, Sun
has series of Java tutorial books. If you want scripting language, you
can try Programming Perl by Wall, et. al. You can try python, tcl/tk too.
Really, there is so much stuff in there and all are well supported in linux.
The network programming stuff is best explained by Steven's
Network Programming book. He uses C though you get the concept and can
apply it to Perl and Java too. But I recommend reading Comer's
Internetworking with TCP/IP book before you try Steven's so you get a
clearer picture of how a computer network operates.
