Linux Programming Unleashed is really good, if a bit expensive. most of it
is for programming in C, including discussions on sockets and
multithreading. it also covers gui programming using the various gui
libraries on linux (motif, GTK, QT, etc), and also has a good intro to gui
programming using Java.

Advanced Programming in the Unix Environment by Stevens is also a really
good book; hopefully National Bookstore still has reprints of it.

for the other languages like PERL or python, try the oreilly books on the
specific language. there are a number of them also available at national.

regards,
joel
