More incremental news:

 o finger on the client works and uses ldap! I'm sure it uses ldap because
if I turn off slapd it only looks for local users (and will hence not know
of any users that aren't in its own /etc/passwd). It's noticeably slower,
and the network traffic is also noticable. I have nscd up and running, so
it looks like finger doesn't go through the nscd.

 o nss_ldap and pam_ldap still look broken on my system, though.
Boohoohoo. I set both to use LDAP already, keeping two root sessions open
to edit the files I need to edit. Haaay. :(
