Hi Rommel,
#tomcat is a standalone webserver(correct me if im wrong) and that
#apache should be disabled for it to work. if you intend to deliver
#
Actually, Tomcat is one of the most flexible JSP engines out there. It
can be use as:
1. standalone web/JSP server: tomcat used as a standalone server with it
being both the webserver, and JSP engine.
2. out-process: Tomcat asks as a handler to .jsp file. Tomcat runs on a
separate process with respect to the web server. This is done by using
the provided modules for Apache, Netscape/iPlanet, and IIS. The Apache
module comes in two (2) flavors, a hacked mod_jserv, and
mod_jk. mod_jserv is a Servlet module for Apache.. the hacked version
redirected the requests to the Tomcat engine. The prefered, and
recommended module to use us mod_jk. It was built from ground up -- it
supports all versions of AJP (Apache JServ Protocol).. Current version if
1.3 (I think)
With this configuration, the Tomcat engine can be in another box, or in
another network for that matter.
3. in-process. Using mod_jserv, the Tomcat engine runs in the same
process as the Apache server. At this config, it works like mod_php, and
mod_perl.
#other dynamic pages other than jsp, consider going for gnujsp installed
#over apache jserv on the apache webserver. first you need to install
#jserv and then gnujsp. try looking for it on apache.org or klomp.org
#
I wouldn't bet the farm of GNUJSP.. It has been abandoned by it's creator,
and it lacks support for the lastest changes in the specification.
..but it's been a while since the last time I used Tomcat, JServ, and
GNUJSP.
stay cool.
