hmmm. i am currently using a S3 Trio 3D/2X on my ancient DEC monitor. 
beautiful is all i can say. no flicker. no sucky fonts. no yucky display.
just beautiful. the only pain was configuring my unsupport modelines
for my monitor. the configuration file is in my website.
