Hmmm... I know there are replies already but let me tell you why it's not
possible to have one without the Telco. There are two standards for caller
ID, but here in the Philippines, PLDT uses DTMF. Globe and Bayantel use the
other type (the name slipped in my memory. Argh!), although many new
Bayantel phone lines, espcially the new ones, now use DTMF. As for DTMF, a
DTMF sequence is sent to your phone line in between the first and second
ring. So, if you are knowledgable in electronics, you can make a circuit
that would capture it and send to your serial port. ;) Of course that's not
fun. Besides, many new modems now support CID, but as far as I know, most
modems don't use support DTMF CID, because this is the old standard. :( If
you want, then maybe you can hack one of those PLDT caller ID boxes.
