I got a small bit of information that I'd like to clarify on the list.

Will kernel preemption (ie: RML's kernel-preempt patch) significantly and
positively affect the performance of Linux boxes that handle
firewall/NAT/router roles?

I was initially under the impression that kernel preemption was only good
for traditionally desktop roles like playing MP3s or "feeling" the
responsiveness even in high loads. However this guy I was talking (via
email, actually) with was saying that with routers, you're not just
concerned with kernel throughput. Instead you want to be sure that the
kernel will continue to respond to all requests even if it's under high
loads.

And then perhaps this also applies to multi-function servers? As they're
enmeshed in an even wider variety tasks that must not all be held at bay
because of one hogging process.

Comments? :)
