hello all,
I've been struggling (intermittently, it's not a high priority) to get sound working
on Mandrake 8.1. i got the modules (sb, i've got a Creative AWE 32, 32 bit
ISA, OSS) working a few days ago. and today i finally got XMMS working.
I have a few questions.
1. when playing MP3s, i hear an "echo". That is, after i hear any part of the
music, i hear it again, but weaker. the interval is very short, but the echo
is definitely there. it's consistent (i hear it across all my MP3s). and i
don't
hear it when i play exactly the same MP3s in windows on the same
machine (dualboot). when i play WAVs i also hear the echo.
has anyone seen this? what can i do?
2. i run KDE. if artsd is running, XMMS won't run. Previously it had an error
saying something like it was blocked from accessing sound and I should
fix that. so i turned off artsd and after a reboot or two (and going into
Gnome
just to see if XMMS worked there... it did) XMMS started running.
can XMMS work with artsd? if yes, how do i configure artsd and XMMS so
they can work with each other. reason is, some things will automatically
start
artsd (e.g., double-clicking by mistake on an mp3 starts the KDE Media
Player. i know, i can fix the file association... but if XMMS can be made to
work with artsd i'd prefer that so that KDE Media Player and other programs
that use artsd can also run.
is artsd's realtime priority setting the secret to losing the echo? or is it
something else? i did a renice -20 on all xmms jobs and that hasn't helped
:).
