since someone has brought KDE, i'll ask a related question.

some of my linux boxes are Pentium 133/166 with 48MB of RAM.
others are Pentium 133/166 with 32 MB of RAM. Mandrake 8.1 with
the stock KDE (2.2.1 from the RPM names :) is too slow on all of
these computers. is Gnome faster? (haven't tried, got discouraged
too quickly, and my users are accustomed to KDE, and i didn't want to
confuse them even if only temporarily.)

i suppose i could install KDE and Gnome support and build my own
desktops and menus and put in menu or links to everything (mainly
games and networking applications) in a lighter WM (i like icewm),
but before i go and try that (could take a while since i'll be doing it on
slow hardware, and in my spare time), has anyone had success
running the latest KDE or Gnome on old, slow, memory-poor
computers and have them run acceptably? is there an easy way to
set all this up? is there stuff i can disable that will free up some memory
and make things run faster?

buying new hardware is not an option. all of this is pro-bono. there is no
budget for upgrading the hardware.
