It won't help. The problem with both GNOME and KDE is that they have a sh*tload of shared libraries, so saving 2MB by using icewm instead of KWM or Sawfish doesn't really go very far. If you only have 32MB to 48MB, forget KDE or GNOME. There's no getting around it. Use something cheap like XFCE and uninstall all your KDE or GNOME apps. Pure Gtk+ apps (not GNOME) are OK, Gtk+ is a fairly lightweight library.
