I like this WM (the "Enlightenment starting" followed by the opening
animation blowed my breath away in awe) but it's too resource-intensive
(with all the chimes, bells and animations) that it sucks the life out
of my machine... which is quite a big turn-off.

Yep. 

Sama mo na rin XFce (found it to be the best when I ran it after
finishing a dist-upgrade to Sid just this morning). It maybe the epitome 
of "uglicity" as Orly claims, but it's snazzy enough for me when you use
it with GNOME. Lightweight too, as Jijo said/recommended.

Haven't tried AfterStep to run with GNOME, though.

hear you people talk re your experiences on OSS/FS and Linux (so sad
that we have a class and exam tomorrow on Operating Systems for the
whole day- Saturday is OS day for CS majors in UP Manila). Good luck
