oh I can work on that project.  I'm weak on CS concepts though, since I
haven't been doing "real CS" for a long time, just scripting and systems
programming glue.  I'd love to relearn, though :)

aside from the above, which is theoretical and an aid to teaching, there
must be some practical or applied benefit.  one is my idea of making 
contributions to free software projects, though the benefit may not be so
clear.  thinking...
