some ideas (posted with all due respect):
1. Pinoy sourceforge seems like a good idea.
- Sourceforge allows you to post your projects even if it
is in the planning, alpha, etc. stage (of course after it
has been approved) From the posts, I see that there's
people here who have code in the planning, or alpha/beta
stage - and maybe they could post it in the Pinoy
sourceforge (if it becomes a reality). I see posts from
William telling us he's got this What'sUp like Perl code,
maybe he should post it - to benefit others as well as
to make it really open-source. I see posts from Orly,
telling us he's got this code (something to do with
cell phones) .. maybe he should post it - to make it
available to other people - di ba that's the spirit of
Open-source - make it available to others so that they
can use it or improve on it? A Pinoy sourceforge would
then be a sort of centralized locatin to post codes.
2. Re-evaluation of PLUG mailing list.
- after the incident with A. Sy - maybe we should evaluate
what should be posted on the PLUG mailing list - and what
to do with violators of the rules. And should PLUG be
a moderated or an unmoderated list? What should be the
actions of the moderators - should they immediately ban
someone - or should a poll be taken first? What are the
punishments? etc. etc. Should Win vs. Linux be a
proper thread in PLUG? Should anonymous posters be
allowed in PLUG? etc. etc.
3. PLUG web site.
- I saw the 'draft?' of the new PLUG web site - nice
design. BTW, again my comments are posted with all due
respect and not meant to disparage or step-on someone.
IMHO, the PLUG web site should be made using Open-Source/
Free software - all elements - from the HTML pages, to
the graphics - to the backend database/scripting language,
etc. Here we are in PLUG - laughing/disparaging MS
because Hotmail's front-end servers are Win2K but backend
servers are FreeBSD. Let's not do that with the PLUG
web site - do it all in Linux. Let's not say do it like,
the front-end (graphics, HTML) were done in Windows, but
the back-end (db, scripts) in Linux. Let's make it done
purely in Linux - then document it (screenshots, list of
tools, timeline, etc.) - this alone would make
a very good case study - on how to make a web site using
only Linux and Open-source/Free softwares.
4. Local Linux case studies
- I think Eric Pareja posted something like this. I think
there should be a page like this on the PLUG web site,
detailing how Linux is being used successfully in
the corporate setting. Q-Linux I think should post how
they are using Linux on their place - they being a
Linux solutions provider. Inter.Net should also post,
as well as Evoserve. Others too? UP Manila? Ateneo?
etc. I singled these orgs out - because I know that there
are people in this list (active too) from this
organizations. Again no disrespect meant. We say that
we use Linux all the time - then tell the world how -
we say that Linux is a good alternative or replacment
for Windows - then tell it to the world - write a
case study of your organization. And I think that the
people in those organizations would not find that so
hard - I've seen their posts - they are very, very
good in written English.
These are all I can think of for now. Again, no disrespect
meant to anyone. This was posted with all due respect.
Regards,
