Did you copy /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage to
/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.17?

and /usr/src/linux/System.map to /boot/System.map-2.4.17?

You might have to make an initrd image

'mkinitrd -f initrd-2.4.17.img 2.4.17'
then copy the image to /boot.
