As we talk about remote backup, I wonder: why not use rsync to keep the
backup tree in sync with the master? It is capable of using an SSH
connection so it's safe. You don't need to run an rsync server on the
other end (but you can, I guess), since the connection is made to the SSH
server. And it only transfers parts of the file which changed. :)

Unless of course you want to preserve things like ACLs if you're using
XFS, in which case you can't use dump anyway (you'll have to use xfsdump).
