They don't have to. The user-ID+password input dialog includes a check box
where you can have IE remember your user ID and password for the site. I thought
it was another addition to the list of "things you can do in IE but not in {your
favorite alternative browser here}" until I learned about the
userID:password@{site-name} trick for NS. Works both for the OS/2 and *nix
versions too.
