Nyek!

I don't know of any MS Publisher-type applications on Linux but to 
convert OpenOffice docs to pdf, I normally do a 2-step process:

1) Save the document in postscript format (.ps) using Save As...

2) Use the command line utility ps2pdf (comes with the ghostscript RPM 
package) to convert your saved .ps file to .pdf.
