In one of my previous computer networks, the asst SysAdmin was so annoyed at a
certain department's ineptness -- e.g., they couldn't print, almost 100% of the
viruses that entered the network originated there -- that she suggested "dumb
terminals for dumb users." While it's the "dumb" users that the network needs to
be protected from, there's merit, regardless of an individual's computer
literacy, in stroring all enterprise-standard software applications in a central
location -- backed up regularly, of course. Neat thing about Linux and the BSDs
is that they lend itself much more easily to this centralization than Windows.
Another neat thing is that you don't even have to standardize on end-user OSes,
as long as there's a decent X server available. Having said that, I should
mention that I was underwhelmed by MiX (from http://www.microimages.com if I
recall rightly) for the Mac. OTOH, I believe that OS X (Roman ten, not letter
ex) comes bundled with an X server, and that might work better than OS 9.x +
MiX. Haven't had a chance to try out CygWin/XFree86 yet. Anyone?
