thanks. that was informative. i'd figured that was probably what System.map was for. the confirmation is really useful though (i've sometimes done stuff for weeks and sometimes even years based on unconfirmed and erroneous superstition, too lazy to confirm and unwilling to ask on a public list like this one :). i guess i'll have to update the link to System.map every time. huh. i'd hoped that there was an implicit mapping so that it could be automatic. or that lilo (or grub) could have a setting so that you could specify which System.map.* to use for which kernel, and the boot manager could then automatically set up the link in /boot before starting the kernel (or something... maybe an append=" map=System.map-2.4.18-test" could work too). tiger _ Philippine Linux Users Group.
