Anyway, I've read the other threads and col -b should fix your problem.
About the "no such file or directory error", can you do this and post the
outputs to us please:

1. ls -l /etc/rc.d | grep local
2. ls -l /etc/rc.d/init.d |grep S99

I am very confident, you can do it! :)
