Don't seek the boss's permission.

1. Find decommisioned machines not currently in use because they're
considered underpowered and obsolete. Your firm probably has a pile
of them. Install your choice of Linux or *BSD.

2. Configure them to function identically (from the remote user point
of view) to the existing ones. Synchronise the contents.

3. After hours, substitute the "obsolete" Unix boxes into active
service in place of the NT ones. Decommission the NT boxes. This
need not require moving any hardware: You might need only to swap
their IP addresses.

4. Enjoy the improved reliability and your increased amounts of free
time.

If anyone ever notices the substitution, just nod absent-mindedly,
taking the attitude that this was routine. (Note that no "bridges have
been burned", as the crummy, unreliable existing host boxes can be
redeployed on short notice, if management insists on dictating software
toolsets outside their area of expertise).
