not true jim :-> i have mix protocols and operating system on the same lan
using tcp/ip, ipx/spx and netbeui without affecting the performance of that
lan... remember that ethernet is on layer 2 while those protocols that i
mentioned are above layer 2... therefore those protocols are encapsulated by
the ethernet frames which is the one who is responsible sending the frames
from source to destination address on layer 2..

one good example why you need multiprotocol in the same lan is the internet
cafe for gaming that required those protocols.

manny, since you mentioned that when you disable the linux/router/gateway,
it went back to normal.. im suspecting that either you have a bad nic or
there is a process on your server that is creating a noise which causes for
high bandwidth utilization which degraded the performance of your lan.

your network topology, mix protocols and operating systems are perfectly
fine.
