Tape backup is unnecassary if you have RAID1 and you regularly switch your
mirror disk.

If you want to stick to opensource drivers, the best you can do with these
firmware-based raid controllers (promise, hpt) is software raid1 over the
ide devices detected by the kernel.  Unfortunately software raid over IDE
does not support hot swap. Only 3ware supports hot swap IDE raid.
