thanks for the reply!

the reason why i took postfix + cyrus + mysql instead of postfix + courier + mysql is 
that the howto that i got has a web interface fitted to the former.

i did check cyrus-imapd and it seems to work. i tried to authenticate users via 
testsaslauthd and telnet localhost 110. it works fine, either way it can recognize my 
users.

         There's nothing wrong with postfix... there is something wrong 
with cyrus.  BTW, a lot of postfix users don't like cyrus... why not try
