If you happen to have a phoenix BIOS, you can (may?) plug in your USB device at any time and use the device.
I have met two instances of PCs using a different BIOS, (IBM is one of them; the other was a guy's PC on #mandrake with a BIOS that wasn't Phoenix either), wherein you must boot up with the USB device for the BIOS to see it. > removal process looks harmless, or is it? > I think so.
