Passwords are encrypted before they are installed in the /etc/shadow
file. So the sysad has to use a program like "crack" to guess the original unencrypted passwords. Crack may discover some passwords, but
not all the passwords to every account. I believe this is not a real
resignation letter.

yeah, i never thought of that and my friend told me the same thing
but with an exception. his previous employer in an ISP is too
non-techie to login, and so he was always asked to login the account and
password of his boss especially when his boss is absent or out of town.

now, he doesn't need to crack passwords but he never used it against
anybody. and besides the ISP is no longer operational (no, wonder...)
