Passwords are encrypted before they are installed in the /etc/shadow
file. So the sysad has to use a program like "crack" to guess the original unencrypted passwords. Crack may discover some passwords, but
not all the passwords to every account. I believe this is not a real
resignation letter.

yeah, i never thought of that and my friend told me the same thing but with an exception. his previous employer in an ISP is too non-techie to login, and so he was always asked to login the account and password of his boss especially when his boss is absent or out of town.
