[crossposted to ph-linux-newbie]
Hi,
This past few days I have been trying to install Red Hat
Linux 8 on a dual-processor board with the Intel 440GX
chipset and Adaptec 7896 SCSI.
The box had been running Red Hat 6.2 and my first option
was to repartition/reformat it since I wanted a 'clean'
install because I don't trust the programs on the box
anymore (the box had been 'rooted')
So, I did the installation process for RH 8.0 - booted
from CD-ROM, repartition, selected packages etc.
Everything went fine - up until the time I first booted
it up - the usual messages came scrolling by - then
after a while it stopped (sorry no sample error messages)
The installer for RH 8.0 was fine - since I used it to
install another Linux box and everything was OK with that
installation. The box I am attempting to install Linux to
was OK since when I reinstalled using RH 6.2 the installation
went ok. I did a search then narrowed it down to the Adaptec
7896 and Intel 440GX problem which RH 7.1 had:
http://www.redhat.com/support/resources/gotchas/7.1/gotchas-71.html
The problem with RH 7.1 was with the installation not continuing,
with me - the installation went fine - but the problem was with
the boot-up not continuing.
What I did was to install RH 6.2 first - then downloaded the
latest kernel (2.4.20) compiled it - then did an upgrade install
from RH 6.2 to RH 8.0. I then edited my grub.conf to have it
boot using the kernel that I compiled. Everything is OK (for now
will still be evaluating it).
Well this is all for now - the process is not as straightforward
as I had posted it - ilang ulit din akong nag install-uninstall-
reformat-repartition before I got it right.
Just wanted to share - I perused a lot of web pages - posts by
different people in the newsgroups to be able to come up with
the solution - just wanted to return something to the
community
HTH,
Joshua L. San Juan
